What salt actually does to rug fibres
De-icing salt is not just cosmetic. Dissolved in slush, it travels into the pile and dries into abrasive crystals. Salt also leaves alkaline residue that can damage wool over time and attracts moisture, which keeps the rug slightly damp and invites that musty entryway smell.
The white stains are only half the problem
Those visible white rings wipe away with a damp cloth, but the residue deep in the pile stays behind. This is why an entrance rug can look clean in April and still feel crunchy or stiff. Vacuuming helps remove dry crystals, but only a proper wash with a neutralizing rinse removes the dissolved salt load completely.
A simple winter defence plan
First, double up: a rough scraper mat outside the door and an absorbent washable mat inside catch most of the slush before it reaches your good rugs. Second, enforce a boots-off rule past the entry zone. Third, vacuum the entry rug twice a week in winter, slowly, so the machine can pull crystals from deep in the pile. Fourth, blot slush puddles quickly; standing salt water is what causes the worst fibre damage and floor staining underneath.
When spring comes, wash the winter out
