Step 1: Ducts first
If your ducts are due (every 3–5 years, or after a renovation), do them before anything else — duct cleaning stops the system from redepositing dust onto everything you clean afterwards. Replace the furnace filter at the same time.
Step 2: Send the area rugs out for a wash
Area rugs are the one item best cleaned away from home. A full-immersion wash removes what surface cleaning cannot — deep grit, salts, dander, odours. Step 4: The sofa and chairs
Book upholstery cleaning the same day as the carpets — same equipment, same visit, and the whole living room resets at once. Yearly for family sofas; twice a year with pets.
Step 5: Tile and grout
Kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways: a professional tile and grout cleaning brings the grout back to its real colour, and a sealer keeps it that way. Every one to two years is plenty.
Step 6: Finish with the windows
Do windows last, so the finale is a flood of clean light over a freshly reset home. Interior, exterior, screens, and tracks — spring and fall.
