Some rugs are floor coverings. Others are family history: the silk piece your grandparents brought over, the hand-knotted Persian bought on a trip decades ago, the runner that has been in the hallway of three different family homes. Cambridge has no shortage of these heirlooms, and they need different care than an everyday wool rug. Handled well, a fine rug outlives its owners; handled badly, a single cleaning mistake can erase a century of craftsmanship.
Why antique and silk rugs are fragile
Age changes fibres. Older wool becomes drier and less elastic; foundations of cotton or silk lose strength; vegetable dyes that have mellowed beautifully over decades can bleed if hit with the wrong chemistry or water temperature. Silk is the most demanding of all — its shine comes from a smooth protein fibre that harsh alkaline cleaners permanently dull. This is why the machines and products used on wall-to-wall carpet should never touch a fine rug.
The everyday rules for heirloom rugs
Keep them out of direct sun, or rotate them regularly so fading is even. Vacuum gently without a beater bar, and never vacuum the fringe. Use a proper rug pad — it prevents the slow grinding wear that happens between rug and floor. Deal with spills instantly by blotting with white towels, and resist every urge to scrub. And at least once a year, lift a corner and look at the back: that is where moth damage and dry rot show first.
What professional care looks like
A fine rug should be washed by hand, start to finish. At our facility we begin with a fibre and dye test on every piece, then remove dry soil with gentle compressed-air dusting, wash with pH-appropriate products matched to the dyes, rinse in clean water until it runs clear, and dry the rug flat in a controlled room — never hanging in the sun. Fringes are cleaned separately by hand. For damaged pieces we also handle repairs: rebinding edges, securing unravelling fringes, and reweaving worn areas.
How often should an heirloom be washed?
Less often than you might think. A fine rug in a low-traffic room needs a professional wash every two to three years; what it needs annually is an inspection for moths, dryness, and wear. Between washes, the gentle routine above does most of the preservation work.
